Matariki or Mata means little eyes or eyes of god.Matariki has become a popular mid-winter festival in New Zealand. Different people and communities celebrate Matariki in different ways. Kite flying was an important part of Matariki in the old days. It is a belief in Maori tradition that kites connect the earth to the heavens.Ancient Maori were very good at making and flying kites . Their kites usually did not have tails and were made from toe toe, manuka, harakeke, raupo, and aute plants with feathers, stones, carving and patterns for decoration. Room 10 celebrated Matariki by making kites using plastic , paper and skewers. We drew koru patterns for decoration. We had a lot of fun running around with our kites. Have a look at these pictures illustrating our kites and the fun we had flying the kites at our school.
